Celebrating Advent

"When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming."
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 524)

Rafa and Gabriela are learning about Advent right now. They are learning that Advent is a time when we take extra special moments each day to pray and prepare for the birth of Baby Jesus! For us grown-ups, it's also about awaiting His second coming - they'll learn about that soon. Since we talked about Jesus being the Light of the World, we decided to make some Advent wreaths and learn more about them. Check them out...
Here is what we learned... The evergreen leaves on the wreath represent eternity. The first purple candle is called the Prophecy Candle to remember Isaiah who foretold the birth of Jesus. The second purple candle is called the Bethlehem candle representing Jesus' birthplace. The rose candle is the Shepherd's candle and it represents joy. Finally, the last purple candle is called the Angel Candle and it represents peace. We will "light" our wreaths until Christmas finally comes!

We also set up our Nativity and the kids are really looking forward to celebrating the day when Jesus is born and they can finally see Him in the manger! We hope your Advent journey is a wonderful one!

Miguel is Two Months Old!

It's amazing - but two months have FLOWN by! Miguel had his two month check up and everything was great! Check out the little man.
Bath time and then wrapped in the
official Candelaria family towel.
Snoozing peacefully

The amazing Dr. Ramirez
Just had to throw in a couple of the kids before we went into Costco
By the way, see that round sticker on Gabriela? I've learned that
it's dangerous to give kids stickers because they end up
on other CARS in the parking lot. I was quickly peeling several stickers off
the other car and hoping the owner didn't show up while I did.

Hangin' at UT

Geneva had a half day of school on Friday, so we hung out at UT while Frankie taught his class. It was a beautiful day!

Rafa is a pretty cool kid!

Here is just Rafa doing his schoolwork, and then Frankie cut up a ham steak for him and Rafa formed parts of it into a rocket! Check it out! I gotta admit, that was creative!

Lorenzo Miguel Candelaria

On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered,
"Life will never be the same."

Because there had never been anyone like you...

ever in the world.

All of our wildest dreams come true...

Today we stumbled upon a terrific playground right near UT. On cue, the kids screamed "swings!!!!" So I had to stop...

Not only did it have swings and a cool playscape, it had an awesome tetherball - suh-weet!!! Rafa and Gab tried out their "skills," a la Napoleon and Deb.

You wanna play me?

Summer So Far...

Despite the serious heat - we've managed to have fun so far this summer. Such as...

Spot-watering the lawn always turns into an event once Gab & Rafa hear the water going

Since Frankie's teaching this summer session, we get to explore a lot of UT and their cool museums. Sweet corn always tastes better in the summer...

Especially if your big brother helps you take a bite.

And, of course, lots of TaeKwonDo!

Happy Father's Day!

What Makes a Dad?
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it ... Dad

We love you...

Happy Mother's Day!

The Most Important Person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honour of having built Notre Dame cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral - a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body... The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation... What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother? ~ Jozsef Cardinal Mindszenty

Easter

We had a busy Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, the kids slept late so I did the early Mass & Frankie did the later one. We folded our palm leaves into crosses and placed them on the mantle. We went through the busyness of the rest of the week mindful of what lay ahead. We attended the Holy (Maundy) Thursday service and Good Friday Lord’s Passion led by the Bishop at the Cathedral. Both were incredibly solemn and beautiful. And fortunately, with careful planning, the kids even managed to make it through both of the long services pretty well.

Then later on Friday evening, Geneva and I attended the Tenebrae Service (service of darkness & shadows) at the Cathedral. If you have never been to one of these, I recommend it highly. It was the first time I had been and it was beautiful. The service is held in the evening, the altar has been completely stripped after the Lord’s Passion, the crucifix and the statues of the Saints are all covered in purple cloth, and only a lit hearse of fifteen candles remains in the center (a hearse is a triangular candle holder usually held over a coffin). The service is essentially a funeral for the Lord and psalms are beautifully sung. As each psalm was finished, the candles were extinguished one-by-one until finally the “Christ Candle” on the highest point of the hearse was extinguished, symbolizing the death of Christ, and the congregation was left in silence and darkness. Suddenly, the silence was broken by a thunder of foot stomping made in the choir loft above. This symbolizes how the earth shook at the moment of Christ’s death. At that point the congregation left the Cathedral in silence. Amazing, just amazing. Fortunately, we know that the light of the world will return… Again, this is a service you can’t miss!

Saturday morning, we hopped in the car for a quick ride down to Katy, Texas to visit my cuz and family. The kids had a great time playing with their little cousins, and the grownups were treated to breakfast as we chatted and laughed and took a trip down the family and Eastwood memory lanes. We had a GREAT time and before we knew it, the entire day had passed. We kept asking ourselves – why don’t we do this more often?? That night we drove over to Clear Lake. We walked around the boardwalk and munched on some snacks. The kids (including Frankie) decided to play (clothes and all) in the Dancing Water Fountains in the middle of the plaza. I don’t know why, but I didn’t have my camera and wished I did. It was a hoot and they were soaked. Rafa especially, the way that boy loves water, he was transported to another dimension as he ran through the fountains. We had a blast (but the Micster and I stayed dry).

Easter Sunday, we made it to a 7:00 a.m. Mass. It was beautiful and the kids were beautifully behaved. As a treat, we all went to the Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned, but Rafa and Gabriela have been on a total rocket kick lately. That town is all about NASA and it was pretty cool. Imagine running into your all-time favorite movie star on the street. That’s how Rafa & Gab reacted when they saw the rockets. What a treat. We did the train tour and the whole nine yards. Again, I don’t know why we don’t do this more often…
